Alex Pall is, along with Andrew Taggart, one half of the Chainsmokers, a DJ duo from New York. They formed in 2012 after their mutual friend- and current band manager- Adam Alpert decided that the two would hit it off. Alpert also knew that both men were trying to transition to full-time DJ’s, and this fact provided a context for the introduction. Pall and Taggart- who both worked in different museums in different states- became friends quickly, vibing with each other and sharing many musical and non-musical interests.
With this introduction came the quick formation of the Chainsmokers as both Pall and Taggart quit their museum jobs and began rehearsing full-time. Taggart even moved from Maine to New York so he could be closer to Pall. After over a year of rehearsing and practicing the Chainsmokers debuted at Terminal 5 in New York, as the opening act for Timeflies. It was a successful debut, gaining them positive reviews and resulting in their releasing recorded, original music.
They have released several chart-topping EPs and a full-length album, which was simultaneously the #1 album on Billboard’s Top 100 and Dance/Electronic charts. The Chainsmokers have also released a large number of free singles that can be downloaded on their website free of charge. These singles sometimes represent the chance for Pall and Taggart to step outside the traditional boundaries of dance/electronic music.
Pall and Taggart are huge fans of much more than dance music: With such a wide range of tastes and their careers as musicians, the Chainsmokers explore synthesizing their normal electronic style with other genres of music. Since these singles are released without accompanying material as with a longer play format, the opportunities for creative exploration become numerous: By not having to synergize every song to an album format, the individual songs can exist on their own merit.
Pall and Taggart also perform vocals on some tracks, another step outside the norms of their music genre. They incorporate live instruments on stage as often as they can, particularly when they perform singing duties in front of a live audience.
